Are Your Feet Happy?

April is National Foot Health Awareness Month. Did you know that the average person takes approximately 10,000 steps per day? That adds up to three million steps per year. That can be a lot of strain on the foot, especially considering we carry approximately four to six times our body weight across the ankle joint when walking up steep inclines or climbing stairs.

According to the American Podiatric Medical Association, around 20 per cent of Americans have at least one foot problem each year. These problems can be a result of underlying health conditions such as diabetese, peripheral neuropathy or obesity. Or they could be the result of ill fitting shoes or a genetic condition.

Here at McKenzie Medical Center (MMC) we know that good foot health is essential to ensure you have a high quality of life. As a result, we have an on staff podiatrist: Dr. Khumalo. Dr. Khumalo has 21 years of experience. He specializes in pediatric reconstructive foot and ankle surgery; diabetic limb salvage and diabetic foot care and wound care.

“I chose this profession as I felt called to serve,” Dr. Khumalo commented, “It is a service that helps children and adults alike. Congenital deformities for children and acquired deformities for adults. It helps keep our community moving forward.”

Dr. Khumalo is passionate about medical mission work, which he has been doing for over 20 years. He has been to Peru, the Philippines, Haiti, Honduras, the Dominican Republic and Wounded Knee Reservation in South Dakota.

“I have used my talents and education to perform hundreds of procedures around the world, helping children who were born with limb deformities – enabling them to walk.”
